In the rapid development of Brazil, the gap between the rich and the poor is still a problem. In 2010, the number of people living in poverty was 16.27 million, accounting for 8.5% of the total population. In 2008, the Gini coefficient was 0.52, leading to poor social security.
A Poll in March 2007 by Datafolha, a Brazilian research firm, found that people believed that violent crime was on the rise in Brazil, especially in big cities such as Sao Paulo and Rio DE Janeiro, where the population is concentrated and the gap between rich and poor is high. Armed robbery, kidnapping and extortion and other vicious cases occurred frequently, the public security situation is relatively grim. Brazil has the second highest rate of violent deaths in the world, with 40,000 deaths a year, according to a United Nations study.
Brazilian citizens can legally own guns, but there are countless illegal ones.
